Rowan had never seen a horse before, so one can imagine his reticence at getting too close to them. He observed them very quietly, not like when he yells out 'gaga' whenever he sees a dog, or 'gagaaaaa' when he says an especially big truck. This was something different, not to be trifled with, something to be feared but respected.
